Psalms 12 · Grade 4

Silver Refined Seven Times

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 12 says it is for the Chief Musician, upon an eight-stringed lyre, and is a Psalm of David. David cries, Help, Yahweh; for the godly man ceases. The faithful fail from among the children of men. Everyone lies to his neighbor with flattering lips and a double heart, which means saying one thing and meaning another. The proud say, With our tongue we will prevail. Our lips are our own. Who is lord over us?

In the middle of the psalm, Yahweh himself answers. Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, he will now arise and set the needy in safety. The psalm contrasts human lies with God's words: Yahweh's words are flawless words, as silver refined in a clay furnace, purified seven times. People's words may be false, but God's words are completely pure. He will keep and preserve the needy, even when the wicked walk on every side.
