Psalms 118 · Grade 4
The Cornerstone
Read and Think
Psalm 118 has no title and names no author. It begins and ends with the same call: Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever. In between, the singer tells how God rescued him.
Out of my distress, I called on Yah. Yah answered me with freedom. Yahweh is on my side. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? It is better to take refuge in Yahweh, than to put confidence in man. Enemies surrounded him, but in Yahweh's name he won. Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation.
At the gate of Yahweh, the singer gives thanks. Then comes a famous picture: The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. In the New Testament, Jesus applies this verse to himself (Matthew 21:42). In the New Testament, when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds shouted words from verse 26 (Matthew 21:9). The psalm celebrates: This is the day that Yahweh has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!
