Psalms 117 · Grade 4

Small Psalm, Big Message

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 117 has no title and names no author. With only two verses, it is the shortest chapter in the Bible, yet its message is as wide as the world.

Verse 1 calls all you nations and all you peoples to praise and extol Yahweh. Israel knew Yahweh as their God, but this psalm invites every people group to worship him too. God's plan always included the nations, as he promised Abraham that all families of the earth would be blessed through him (Genesis 12:3).

Verse 2 gives two reasons for praise. First, his loving kindness is great toward us. Second, Yahweh's faithfulness endures forever. In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 1 to show that God's mercy in Christ reaches people of every nation (Romans 15:11).

  1. How long is Psalm 117?

  2. Whom does the psalm invite to worship Yahweh?

  3. What promise to Abraham included the nations?

Psalms 117 · Grade 5

Praise as Wide as the World

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 117 has no title and names no author. It is the shortest chapter in the Bible: two verses, a call and a reason. Yet it carries one of the widest messages in the Old Testament: every nation is invited to praise the God of Israel.

The call is universal: Praise Yahweh, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples! This reflects God's promise to Abraham that in him all the families of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 12:3). Israel's worship was meant to draw the nations to the true God. The psalm imagines a day when people of every language join in praise.

The reason is personal and lasting: his loving kindness is great toward us, and Yahweh's faithfulness endures forever. Notice the word us: what God did for Israel becomes a reason for the nations to praise. In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 1 in Romans 15:11 to show that Gentiles glorify God for his mercy in Christ, and Revelation 7:9 pictures a great multitude from every nation worshiping before God's throne.

Show What You Know

  1. What are the two parts of Psalm 117?

  2. What Old Testament promise does the psalm reflect?

  3. Why is the word us important in verse 2?

  4. How does Revelation 7:9 complete the picture?
