Psalms 116 · Grade 5

The Cup of Salvation

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 116 has no title and names no author. The psalm opens with a reason for love: I love Yahweh, because he listens to my voice. Prayer answered becomes love returned.

The singer recalls a near-death crisis: the cords of death surrounded him and the pains of Sheol got hold of him. He prayed a short, desperate prayer, and God rescued him. He says God delivered his soul from death, his eyes from tears, and his feet from falling. He admits that in his haste he said all people are liars, but he learned that God is gracious, righteous, and merciful. In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 10, I believed, therefore I said, to show that faith speaks out (2 Corinthians 4:13).

The singer's question, What will I give to Yahweh for all his benefits toward me? has a surprising answer: he will take, not give. He will take the cup of salvation and call on Yahweh's name. Grateful people receive God's gifts and then worship publicly, keeping their vows in the courts of Yahweh's house. He calls himself God's servant, whom God has freed from his chains.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the singer say he will take?

  2. From what three things did God deliver the singer?

  3. How does Paul use verse 10?

  4. What is surprising about the singer's answer to what he will give God?
