The Real God

Read the Story

Psalm 115 says that glory belongs to God, not to us. Our God is in the heavens.

Some people made idols out of silver and gold. Idols have mouths, but they cannot talk. They have eyes, but they cannot see. They have feet, but they cannot walk. Our God is alive and real! So the psalm says, trust in Yahweh. He is our help and our shield. He will bless us.

Real God or Fake Gods

Read the Story

Psalm 115 has no title. It begins, Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory. The nations asked, Where is their God? The answer: our God is in the heavens. He does whatever he pleases.

The nations' idols are silver and gold, made by people. They have mouths, but they don't speak. They have ears, but they don't hear. They have feet, but they don't walk. Those who make them will be like them.

So the psalm says, Israel, trust in Yahweh! He is their help and their shield. Yahweh remembers us. He will bless those who fear him, both small and great.

Glory Belongs to God

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 115 has no title and names no author. It begins humbly: Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory, for your loving kindness, and for your truth's sake. When the nations mock, Where is their God, now? the answer is clear: But our God is in the heavens. He does whatever he pleases.

Next the psalm describes idols. They are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, eyes, ears, noses, hands, and feet, but they don't speak, see, hear, smell, feel, or walk. Then comes a warning: Those who make them will be like them. People become like what they worship.

The psalm calls three groups to trust: Israel, the house of Aaron, and all who fear Yahweh. Each time it answers, He is their help and their shield. Yahweh remembers us and will bless those who fear him, both small and great. The psalm ends, We will bless Yah, from this time forward and forever more.

Psalms 115 · Grade 5

Becoming Like What We Worship

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 115 has no title and names no author. It opens by refusing glory: Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory. The reason is God's loving kindness and truth. When the nations taunt, Where is their God, now? the singer answers that God is not missing; he is in the heavens and does whatever he pleases.

The psalm then mocks the idols with a careful list. They have mouths, eyes, ears, noses, hands, feet, and throats, yet every part is useless. Idols look alive but are lifeless, the work of men's hands. Verse 8 draws the lesson: Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them. People are shaped by what they worship. Those who trust lifeless things grow spiritually deaf and blind.

By contrast, the living God helps. Three times the psalm says, He is their help and their shield. Yahweh remembers us. He will bless both small and great. The heavens are Yahweh's heavens, but he has given the earth to the children of men. Because God is alive, his people respond with lasting praise: we will bless Yah, from this time forward and forever more.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does the singer refuse glory for his people?

  2. What makes idols useless, according to the list?

  3. How are people shaped by what they worship?

  4. What does the psalm repeat three times about God?
