Psalms 114 · Grade 4
When Creation Trembles
Read and Think
Psalm 114 has no title and names no author. In eight verses it retells the exodus as a poem. When Israel went out of Egypt, Judah became his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion. God's people became the place where he lived and ruled.
The psalm pictures creation reacting to God. The sea saw it, and fled. The Jordan was driven back. The mountains skipped like rams. The poet then asks the sea, the Jordan, and the mountains playful questions about why they moved.
The answer is the presence of God: Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob. The same God who makes the earth tremble also provides for his people. He turned the rock into a pool of water and the flint into a spring of waters, as he did in the wilderness.
