The God Who Stoops Down

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 113 has no title and names no author. It calls Yahweh's servants to bless his name from this time forward and forever more, and from the rising of the sun to its going down.

Yahweh is high above all nations, and his glory is above the heavens. The psalm asks, Who is like Yahweh, our God, who has his seat on high, who stoops down to see in heaven and on the earth? God is so high that he must stoop even to look at the heavens.

Yet this high God cares for the lowly. He raises up the poor out of the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, setting them with princes. He settles the barren woman in her home as a joyful mother of children, as he did for Sarah and Hannah. The psalm ends as it began, with Praise Yah!

Greatness and Humility

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 113 has no title and names no author. Psalm 113 calls Yahweh's servants to praise his name at every time and in every place, from sunrise to sunset.

The center of the psalm is a question: Who is like Yahweh, our God? The answer is no one. He is high above all nations, and his glory is above the heavens. So exalted is he that he stoops down to see in heaven and on the earth. God's greatness is not distant coldness. His height makes his stooping all the more wonderful.

The final verses show what God does when he stoops. He raises up the poor out of the dust, lifts the needy from the ash heap, and seats them with princes. He gives the barren woman a home as a joyful mother of children. Hannah sang a similar song in 1 Samuel 2:8. In the New Testament, Mary sang a similar song in Luke 1:52. In the New Testament, Christians see God's stooping most fully in Jesus, who humbled himself to lift up the lowly (Philippians 2:7-8).

  1. From when to when should Yahweh's name be praised?

  2. What is the answer to the psalm's question, Who is like Yahweh?
