Psalms 112 · Grade 5
Reflecting God's Character
Read and Think
Psalm 112 has no title and names no author. It is the twin of Psalm 111. Both are Hebrew acrostics and both begin with Praise Yah! Psalm 111 says that God's righteousness endures forever and that he is gracious and merciful. Psalm 112 uses the same words for the person who fears Yahweh: his righteousness endures forever, and he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
This person delights greatly in God's commandments. He is generous: it is well with the man who deals graciously and lends. He has dispersed, he has given to the poor. In the New Testament, Paul quotes these words when he urges the church in Corinth to give generously, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7-9).
The upright still face darkness, but light dawns in the darkness for them. He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in Yahweh. His security does not come from easy circumstances but from a heart established in God. The psalm ends by contrasting him with the wicked, whose desire will perish.
