Psalms 112 · Grade 4
A Steadfast Heart
Read and Think
Psalm 112 has no title and names no author. Like Psalm 111, it is an acrostic poem in Hebrew. It begins, Praise Yah! Blessed is the man who fears Yahweh, who delights greatly in his commandments. His offspring will be mighty in the land.
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, gracious, merciful, and righteous. The blessed man deals graciously and lends. He has dispersed, he has given to the poor. These words echo what Psalm 111 says about God, who is gracious and merciful. The person who fears God begins to look like God.
He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in Yahweh. The wicked will see it and be grieved, and the desire of the wicked will perish. In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 9 to encourage Christians to give cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:9).
