The middle of the psalm lists God's works. They are great, pondered by all those who delight in them. His righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wonderful works to be remembered. He has given food to those who fear him, and he always remembers his covenant. The works of his hands are truth and justice.

Pondering God's Works

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 111 has no title and names no author. In Hebrew it is an acrostic, with each half line starting with the next letter of the alphabet. Its twin, Psalm 112, follows the same pattern. Psalm 111 describes God; Psalm 112 describes the person who fears God.

The singer gives thanks with his whole heart and calls God's works great, pondered by all those who delight in them. To ponder is to study and think deeply. God's work is honor and majesty, and he has caused his wonderful works to be remembered. He is gracious and merciful. He gave food to those who fear him and showed his people the power of his works. He has sent redemption to his people and ordained his covenant forever.

The final verse names the root of wisdom: The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. This is not terror but reverent awe that leads to trust and obedience. Those who do his work have a good understanding. The same truth appears in Proverbs 9:10, showing that true wisdom begins with a right relationship with God.

  1. How are Psalms 111 and 112 related?

  2. What does it mean to ponder God's works?

  3. What two things has God done for his people in verse 9?

  4. Which other book teaches the same idea about wisdom?
