Yahweh makes a promise. This King will also be a priest forever. A priest helps people come near to God. In the New Testament, Jesus uses this psalm to ask how David could call the Messiah Lord (Matthew 22:41-45), and Christians believe Jesus is this King and Priest.

The Lord at God's Right Hand

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 110 is titled A Psalm by David. It is short, but the New Testament quotes it more than any other psalm. It begins with Yahweh speaking to David's Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet. The right hand is the place of highest honor and power.

Yahweh will send out the rod of this King's strength from Zion, and he will rule among his enemies. His people offer themselves willingly in the day of his power. Then comes a solemn oath: Yahweh has sworn, and will not change his mind: You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. In Israel kings and priests came from different tribes, but this King is both.

In the New Testament, Jesus asked how David could call the Messiah my Lord if he was only David's son (Matthew 22:41-45). In the New Testament, Hebrews explains that Jesus is a priest forever like Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:6). The psalm ends with the King winning over the nations and lifting up his head.

Psalms 110 · Grade 5

David's Lord, Priest Forever

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 110 is titled A Psalm by David, and it is the psalm the New Testament quotes most often. In verse 1, Yahweh says to David's Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet. David, the king, speaks of someone greater than himself as my Lord. In the New Testament, Jesus used this verse to show that the Messiah is more than David's son (Matthew 22:41-45).

The King rules from Zion, and his people offer themselves willingly in the day of his power, in holy array. Verse 4 records an oath: Yahweh has sworn, and will not change his mind: You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High who blessed Abraham (Genesis 14:18-20). In the New Testament, Hebrews argues that Jesus is a better High Priest, appointed by oath, who lives forever to intercede (Hebrews 7:17-25).

Verses 5-7 describe the Lord at the King's right hand judging among the nations and defeating rulers. The final image is quiet: He will drink of the brook on the way; therefore he will lift up his head. In the New Testament, Christians see Psalm 110 as a picture of Jesus, who sits at God's right hand as King and serves forever as Priest.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does David's calling the King my Lord matter?

  2. Who was Melchizedek, according to Genesis 14?

  3. What makes this priesthood different?

  4. What final image ends the psalm?
