Psalms 110 · Grade 4
The Lord at God's Right Hand
Read and Think
Psalm 110 is titled A Psalm by David. It is short, but the New Testament quotes it more than any other psalm. It begins with Yahweh speaking to David's Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet. The right hand is the place of highest honor and power.
Yahweh will send out the rod of this King's strength from Zion, and he will rule among his enemies. His people offer themselves willingly in the day of his power. Then comes a solemn oath: Yahweh has sworn, and will not change his mind: You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. In Israel kings and priests came from different tribes, but this King is both.
In the New Testament, Jesus asked how David could call the Messiah my Lord if he was only David's son (Matthew 22:41-45). In the New Testament, Hebrews explains that Jesus is a priest forever like Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:6). The psalm ends with the King winning over the nations and lifting up his head.
