Psalms 11 · Grade 5
Looking Up, Not Running Away
Read and Think
Psalm 11's title says it is for the Chief Musician and is by David. It begins with a statement of faith: In Yahweh, I take refuge. The rest of the psalm explains why David refuses the advice to flee as a bird to his mountain. The danger is real: the wicked bend their bows and aim in darkness at the upright in heart. The advisers ask a hard question: If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?
David's answer is not a plan of escape but a view of God. Yahweh is in his holy temple; Yahweh is on his throne in heaven. Earthly foundations may shake, but God's throne does not. His eyes observe and examine the children of men. He examines the righteous, while his soul hates the wicked and him who loves violence. Verse 6 pictures his judgment on the wicked with images of fire and scorching wind.
The psalm closes on the character of God: For Yahweh is righteous. He loves righteousness. The upright shall see his face. The greatest reward for the upright is not escape from danger but seeing God himself. In the New Testament, Jesus says that the pure in heart are blessed, for they shall see God (Matthew 5:8).
