Forgetful People, Faithful God

Name Date

Read the Story

Psalm 106 has no title. It begins with praise: give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good. Then it tells the truth: We have sinned with our fathers.

In Egypt the people did not understand God's wonders. They rebelled at the Red Sea. Still God saved them for his name's sake. He dried up the sea and led them through. Then they believed his words and sang.

But they soon forgot his works. They made a calf in Horeb and worshiped it. They grumbled in their tents. God helped them many times. When he heard their cry, he remembered his covenant. The psalm ends with a prayer: Save us, Yahweh, our God.

A Long Story of Mercy

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 106 has no title and names no author. It opens with praise: Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever. Then it becomes a prayer of confession. The singer says, We have sinned with our fathers, and retells how Israel failed again and again.

At the Red Sea the people were rebellious, yet God saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power known. He rebuked the sea, and it dried up. Then they believed his words and sang his praise. But they soon forgot his works. They tested God in the desert, envied Moses and Aaron, made a calf in Horeb, and despised the pleasant land.

The psalm notes moments when someone stood in the gap. Moses stood before God in the breach, and Phinehas stood up so the plague was stopped. Later the people served idols and were ruled by other nations. Even so, God regarded their distress when he heard their cry, and he remembered his covenant. The psalm closes by asking God to gather his people and with a blessing: Let all the people say, Amen.

Confession and Covenant Love

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 106 has no title and names no author. It is framed by praise, opening with Praise Yahweh! and closing with Praise Yah! Between these lines is one of the longest confessions in the Psalms. The singer joins himself to his people's past: We have sinned with our fathers. We have committed iniquity. We have done wickedly.

The psalm walks through Israel's history. At the Red Sea they did not remember God's loving kindnesses, yet he saved them for his name's sake. They believed and sang, but they soon forgot. They craved food in the desert, envied Moses and Aaron, exchanged their glory for an image of a bull that eats grass, and refused to believe his word about the pleasant land. Later they mixed with the nations and served their idols. Each time, the psalm is honest about sin.

Yet the theme beneath the story is God's faithfulness. Moses stood in the breach to turn away God's wrath. When the people were brought low, God regarded their distress, heard their cry, and remembered his covenant according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses. The closing prayer, Save us, Yahweh, our God, gather us from among the nations, shows hope that God's mercy is greater than his people's failures.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the singer include himself in Israel's sin?

  2. What did Israel exchange their glory for?

  3. What did Moses do in the breach?

  4. What gives the psalm hope at the end?
