Psalms 106 · Grade 5

Confession and Covenant Love

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 106 has no title and names no author. It is framed by praise, opening with Praise Yahweh! and closing with Praise Yah! Between these lines is one of the longest confessions in the Psalms. The singer joins himself to his people's past: We have sinned with our fathers. We have committed iniquity. We have done wickedly.

The psalm walks through Israel's history. At the Red Sea they did not remember God's loving kindnesses, yet he saved them for his name's sake. They believed and sang, but they soon forgot. They craved food in the desert, envied Moses and Aaron, exchanged their glory for an image of a bull that eats grass, and refused to believe his word about the pleasant land. Later they mixed with the nations and served their idols. Each time, the psalm is honest about sin.

Yet the theme beneath the story is God's faithfulness. Moses stood in the breach to turn away God's wrath. When the people were brought low, God regarded their distress, heard their cry, and remembered his covenant according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses. The closing prayer, Save us, Yahweh, our God, gather us from among the nations, shows hope that God's mercy is greater than his people's failures.
