The Great Creator

Name Date

Read the Story

Psalm 104 has no title. It praises Yahweh as the great Creator. God covers himself with light like a garment. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain.

God set the waters in their place. He sends springs into the valleys, and the animals drink. God makes grass grow for cattle and plants for people. The moon marks the seasons, and the sun knows when to set.

The sea is great and wide and full of living things. Ships sail on it. All the creatures wait for God to give them food. When he opens his hand, they are filled with good. The singer says he will sing to Yahweh as long as he lives.

Psalms 104 · Grade 4

A Song About Creation

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 104 has no title and names no author. It begins, Bless Yahweh, my soul. The singer praises God as very great, clothed with honor and majesty. God covers himself with light and makes the clouds his chariot. The psalm walks through creation much like the days of Genesis 1.

God laid the foundations of the earth and set a boundary for the waters. He sends springs into the valleys, where wild donkeys drink and birds sing among the branches. He causes grass to grow for livestock and food for people, including bread that strengthens man's heart. The moon marks the seasons, and the young lions seek their food from God.

The singer cries out, Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom, you have made them all. The sea holds creatures small and large. All of them wait for God to give them food. When God sends out his Spirit, they are created. The psalm ends with the singer promising to sing to Yahweh as long as he lives.

Psalms 104 · Grade 5

Wisdom in All His Works

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 104 has no title and names no author. It opens and closes with the same words, Bless Yahweh, my soul, framing a long hymn about creation. God is very great, clothed with honor and majesty. He covers himself with light as with a garment, stretches out the heavens like a curtain, makes the clouds his chariot, and walks on the wings of the wind.

The psalm follows a pattern similar to the days of creation in Genesis 1: light, the heavens, waters and dry land, plants, the moon and sun, the sea creatures, and the animals and people. At God's rebuke the waters fled to their place, and he set a boundary that they may not pass over. Springs water the valleys, birds nest in the cedars, and the stork makes its home in the cypress trees. Even the ships and the great leviathan share the wide sea that God formed.

The heart of the psalm is verse 24: Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom, you have made them all. Every creature depends on God. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good. When God sends out his Spirit, they are created, and he renews the face of the ground. The singer responds with lifelong worship, promising to sing praise to God while he has any being.

Show What You Know

  1. What words frame the beginning and end of the psalm?
