Psalms 104 · Grade 5
Wisdom in All His Works
Read and Think
Psalm 104 has no title and names no author. It opens and closes with the same words, Bless Yahweh, my soul, framing a long hymn about creation. God is very great, clothed with honor and majesty. He covers himself with light as with a garment, stretches out the heavens like a curtain, makes the clouds his chariot, and walks on the wings of the wind.
The psalm follows a pattern similar to the days of creation in Genesis 1: light, the heavens, waters and dry land, plants, the moon and sun, the sea creatures, and the animals and people. At God's rebuke the waters fled to their place, and he set a boundary that they may not pass over. Springs water the valleys, birds nest in the cedars, and the stork makes its home in the cypress trees. Even the ships and the great leviathan share the wide sea that God formed.
The heart of the psalm is verse 24: Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom, you have made them all. Every creature depends on God. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good. When God sends out his Spirit, they are created, and he renews the face of the ground. The singer responds with lifelong worship, promising to sing praise to God while he has any being.
