From Weakness to Hope

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 102 is titled a Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint before Yahweh. The title gives no author. The prayer is honest. The singer asks Yahweh to hear him and to answer quickly in the day when he calls.

He describes how he feels. His days consume away like smoke. His heart is blighted like grass, and he forgets to eat his bread. He is like a pelican of the wilderness and like a sparrow that is alone on the housetop. His days are like a long shadow.

At verse 12 the prayer turns: But you, Yahweh, will remain forever. God will arise and have mercy on Zion. He looks down from heaven to hear the groans of the prisoner. The singer remembers that God laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens will wear out like a garment, but God is the same, and his years will have no end.

  1. What does the title say about the person praying?

  2. What is his heart compared to?

Psalms 102 · Grade 5

The God Who Does Not Change

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 102 is titled a Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint before Yahweh. Its title names no author, which lets anyone who is hurting pray it. The singer does not hide his pain. He asks Yahweh not to hide his face, and he describes days that consume away like smoke and a heart blighted like grass.

His word pictures show loneliness: a pelican of the wilderness, an owl of the waste places, a sparrow alone on the housetop. Enemies reproach him all day, and his days are like a long shadow. Then verse 12 turns the whole psalm: But you, Yahweh, will remain forever. The singer looks beyond his own short days to God's endless years and to God's mercy on Zion.

The closing verses contrast the creation with the Creator. Of old, God laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of his hands. They will wear out like a garment, but God remains the same, and his years will have no end. In the New Testament, Hebrews 1:10-12 applies these words about the unchanging Lord to the Son of God.

Show What You Know

  1. Why might the title name no author?

  2. What three lonely birds does the singer name?

  3. What does verse 12 say about Yahweh?

  4. Where does the New Testament use these words, and about whom?
