Psalms 100 · Grade 5

Enter His Gates

Read and Think

Psalm 100 is titled A Psalm of thanksgiving, and the Hebrew word in the title can also mean a thank offering. It is the closing doxology of the group of psalms that proclaim God as King. Its five verses contain seven commands: shout for joy, serve, come, know, enter, give thanks, and bless. The audience is all you lands, so the whole world is invited into Israel's worship.

The center of the psalm is a confession of faith: Know that Yahweh, he is God. It is he who has made us, and we are his. We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. The first reason we belong to God is creation; the second is care, as a shepherd for his flock. Worship begins with knowing who God is and whose we are.

The psalm pictures a procession: Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise. The reasons in verse 5 echo Israel's great confession about God's character: For Yahweh is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations. Joyful worship is grounded not in our feelings but in the lasting goodness of God.
