You Do See

Read the Story

Psalm 10 has no title. It begins with a question for God. Why do you stand far off, Yahweh? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

The wicked are proud and hunt down the weak. They have no room in their thoughts for God. The wicked man says in his heart that God has forgotten and will never see it.

The psalmist asks God to arise and not forget the helpless. Then he says, But you do see trouble and grief. God helps the victim and the fatherless. Yahweh is King forever and ever! He has heard the desire of the humble. He will judge the fatherless and the oppressed.

God Has Not Forgotten

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 10 has no title, so it does not name a writer. It opens with an honest question: Why do you stand far off, Yahweh? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? The psalmist is troubled because the wicked seem to win.

He describes the wicked man. He boasts of his heart's cravings, and in his pride he has no room in his thoughts for God. He says in his heart that he shall not be shaken. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit, and he lies in wait to catch the helpless. He tells himself that God has forgotten and will never see.

The psalmist calls on God: Arise, Yahweh! God, lift up your hand! Don't forget the helpless. Then he declares the truth: But you do see trouble and grief. God helps the victim and the fatherless. Yahweh is King forever and ever. He has heard the desire of the humble, and he will judge the fatherless and the oppressed.

Psalms 10 · Grade 5

You Have Heard the Humble

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 10 has no title. In the Hebrew it continues the partial alphabet pattern of Psalm 9, and it carries the same concern for the afflicted. It begins with a lament: Why do you stand far off, Yahweh? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? The psalm lets believers voice confusion when God seems distant.

Much of the psalm is a portrait of the arrogant wicked man. He boasts of his heart's cravings, blesses the greedy, and condemns Yahweh. In the pride of his face he has no room in his thoughts for God. Like a lion in ambush, he lies in wait to catch the helpless. His deepest error is living as if God were absent: he says in his heart that God has forgotten, hides his face, and will never see it. In the New Testament, Romans 3:14 uses verse 7, about a mouth full of cursing, to describe the sin of all people.

The final section answers the lament. The psalmist prays, Arise, Yahweh! God, lift up your hand! Don't forget the helpless. He declares that God does see trouble and grief and helps the victim and the fatherless. The psalm ends in confidence: Yahweh is King forever and ever. He has heard the desire of the humble, will prepare their heart, and will judge the fatherless and the oppressed.
