Psalms 10 · Grade 5
You Have Heard the Humble
Read and Think
Psalm 10 has no title. In the Hebrew it continues the partial alphabet pattern of Psalm 9, and it carries the same concern for the afflicted. It begins with a lament: Why do you stand far off, Yahweh? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? The psalm lets believers voice confusion when God seems distant.
Much of the psalm is a portrait of the arrogant wicked man. He boasts of his heart's cravings, blesses the greedy, and condemns Yahweh. In the pride of his face he has no room in his thoughts for God. Like a lion in ambush, he lies in wait to catch the helpless. His deepest error is living as if God were absent: he says in his heart that God has forgotten, hides his face, and will never see it. In the New Testament, Romans 3:14 uses verse 7, about a mouth full of cursing, to describe the sin of all people.
The final section answers the lament. The psalmist prays, Arise, Yahweh! God, lift up your hand! Don't forget the helpless. He declares that God does see trouble and grief and helps the victim and the fatherless. The psalm ends in confidence: Yahweh is King forever and ever. He has heard the desire of the humble, will prepare their heart, and will judge the fatherless and the oppressed.
