Wisdom and Creation

Name Date

Read and Think

Wisdom is personified as a woman who calls out at the gates of the city: I call to you men! I send my voice to the sons of mankind. She offers truth and righteousness: All the words of my mouth are in righteousness. There is nothing crooked or perverse in them. For wisdom is better than rubies. All the things that may be desired can't be compared to it.

Wisdom's character matches God's character. The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth. Good government depends on her: By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. She is not hard to find for those who want her: I love those who love me. Those who seek me diligently will find me.

Then wisdom describes creation as a poem: When he established the heavens, I was there. When he gave to the sea its boundary, that the waters should not violate his commandment, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was the craftsman by his side. The world was made with wisdom and joy. Many Christians have seen in this chapter a picture that points to Christ, whom the New Testament calls the wisdom of God. This is an interpretation, and it does not mean the Son of God was created. In the New Testament, Paul calls Christ the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24), and John says all things were made through Him (John 1:3).
