The father begins with tender words: My son, keep my words. Lay up my commandments within you. Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye. He adds, Tell wisdom, You are my sister. Call understanding your relative. Wisdom will keep the son from being led into sin by flattering words.

Then the father gives a warning from what he saw. For at the window of my house, I looked out through my lattice. He saw a young man void of understanding. He was led into sin by flattering words, and sin brought him harm. The father warns his son not to let his heart turn to the ways of sin.

Proverbs 7 · Grade 5

The Way of Wisdom and the Way of Folly

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter opens with the father's urgent plea: My son, keep my words. Lay up my commandments within you. Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers. Write them on the tablet of your heart. God's word is meant to be part of daily life, as close as our fingers, eyes, and heart. Tell wisdom, You are my sister.

The father then describes a scene he saw from his window. I discerned among the youths a young man void of understanding. He was led into sin by flattering words, and sin brought him harm.

The lesson is clear. The young man drifted toward sin before he fell into it. Sin promised pleasure, but it led to harm. Now therefore, sons, listen to me. Pay attention to the words of my mouth. The father warns his sons not to let their hearts turn to the ways of sin, or go astray in its paths. In the New Testament, Paul writes that God will make the way of escape when we are tempted (1 Corinthians 10:13).
