The Ant and the Lamp

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter opens with a warning about promising to pay a neighbor's debt without thinking. Then comes a lesson from nature: Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise; which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. The ant works without being told and plans ahead.

How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep? The lazy person's motto is a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands. Then poverty comes like a robber.

Proverbs lists six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven: arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, a heart that devises wicked schemes, a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers. The list also includes violence and running to mischief. The father ends: For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light.

Proverbs 6 · Grade 5

Wisdom for Work and Words

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter begins with practical money wisdom. My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, … you are trapped by the words of your mouth. The father urges quick action: Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor. Then he turns to nature: Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise. The ant has no chief, overseer, or ruler, yet she prepares in summer for later. Wisdom is diligence and planning, not waiting to be forced.

The sluggard's excuse is small: a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep, so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man. Small habits add up. The father then describes a worthless person who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.

Next is a list: There are six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him. The list moves through the body: arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, violent hands, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief, a false witness, and he who sows discord among brothers. The father ends by saying his commandment will guide his son and guard him from wrecking his life and marriage: For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.
