Proverbs 6 · Grade 4

The Ant and the Lamp

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter opens with a warning about promising to pay a neighbor's debt without thinking. Then comes a lesson from nature: Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise; which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. The ant works without being told and plans ahead.

How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep? The lazy person's motto is a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands. Then poverty comes like a robber.

Proverbs lists six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven: arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, a heart that devises wicked schemes, a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers. The list also includes violence and running to mischief. The father ends: For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light.
