Proverbs 31 · Grade 4

The Worthy Woman

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 31 begins with the words of King Lemuel—the revelation which his mother taught him. She warned him against things that destroy kings. Then she urged him: Open your mouth for the mute, in the cause of all who are left desolate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy.

The book ends with a poem about a worthy woman. Who can find a worthy woman? For her value is far above rubies. The heart of her husband trusts in her. She works eagerly with her hands. She rises also while it is yet night, gives food to her household. She opens her arms to the poor; yes, she extends her hands to the needy. Strength and dignity are her clothing.

She opens her mouth with wisdom. Kind instruction is on her tongue. Her children rise up and call her blessed. Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears Yahweh, she shall be praised. The book that began with the fear of Yahweh ends with it too.
