Agur's Prayer

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 30 records the words of Agur the son of Jakeh. Agur begins humbly, saying he is the most ignorant man. He asks questions only God can answer: Who has ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment?

Agur trusts God's word. Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Don't you add to his words. Then he prays: Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me. He fears that riches could make him forget God and poverty could tempt him to steal.

Agur loved to observe creation. There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise: The ants are not a strong people, yet they provide their food in the summer. The hyraxes are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks. The locusts have no king, yet they advance in ranks. You can catch a lizard with your hands, yet it is in kings' palaces.

Proverbs 30 · Grade 5

Neither Poverty nor Riches

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 30 is the words of Agur the son of Jakeh, a wise man we know nothing else about. He opens with humility: Surely I am the most ignorant man, and don't have a man's understanding. I have not learned wisdom, neither do I have the knowledge of the Holy One. His questions echo God's speech to Job: Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth?

Agur turns to God's word: Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Don't you add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar. His prayer is a model of contentment: Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full, deny you, and say, Who is Yahweh? or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

Agur groups his observations in numbered lists. There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants, the hyraxes, the locusts, and the lizard. Each shows that wisdom is not about size or strength. In the New Testament, Jesus taught His disciples to pray, Give us today our daily bread (Matthew 6:11).
