Paths Made Straight

Name Date

Read and Think

The father begins, My son, don't forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments. Don't let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart. Then comes one of the best known verses in the Bible: Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Trusting God shows in daily life. Honor Yahweh with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase. My son, don't despise Yahweh's discipline, neither be weary of his correction; for whom Yahweh loves, he corrects, even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights.

Wisdom is worth more than silver and fine gold. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. By wisdom Yahweh founded the earth. Wisdom also changes how we treat others: Don't withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it. Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble.

Proverbs 3 · Grade 5

Trust and Wisdom

Name Date

Read and Think

A father urges his son to keep his commandments, for they will add to you length of days, years of life, and peace. He tells him to bind kindness and truth around his neck. The center of the chapter is a call to trust: Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Don't be wise in your own eyes. Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil. Trust is not a feeling only. It shows in every choice.

Trust shows in giving: Honor Yahweh with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase. It shows in accepting correction: for whom Yahweh loves, he corrects, even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights. In the New Testament, the writer of Hebrews quotes this passage to remind believers that God disciplines them as His children (Hebrews 12:5-6).

Wisdom is better than silver and gold. Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. By wisdom Yahweh founded the earth. The chapter ends by applying wisdom to neighbors: Don't withhold good from those to whom it is due. Don't devise evil against your neighbor. Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble.

  1. What will keeping the commandments add?

  2. What does it mean not to lean on your own understanding?

  3. What does Yahweh's correction show?
