Proverbs 3 · Grade 5
Trust and Wisdom
Read and Think
A father urges his son to keep his commandments, for they will add to you length of days, years of life, and peace. He tells him to bind kindness and truth around his neck. The center of the chapter is a call to trust: Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Don't be wise in your own eyes. Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil. Trust is not a feeling only. It shows in every choice.
Trust shows in giving: Honor Yahweh with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase. It shows in accepting correction: for whom Yahweh loves, he corrects, even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights. In the New Testament, the writer of Hebrews quotes this passage to remind believers that God disciplines them as His children (Hebrews 12:5-6).
Wisdom is better than silver and gold. Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. By wisdom Yahweh founded the earth. The chapter ends by applying wisdom to neighbors: Don't withhold good from those to whom it is due. Don't devise evil against your neighbor. Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble.
