Proverbs 29 · Grade 5

The Fear of Man

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 29 opens with a warning: He who is often rebuked and stiffens his neck will be destroyed suddenly, with no remedy. Refusing correction again and again is dangerous. Leadership affects everyone: When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan. The king who fairly judges the poor, his throne shall be established forever.

Anger and pride are destructive. Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger. A fool vents all of his anger, but a wise man brings himself under control. An angry man stirs up strife, and a wrathful man abounds in sin. A man's pride brings him low, but one of lowly spirit gains honor. Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed.

Verse 25 addresses a common struggle: The fear of man proves to be a snare, but whoever puts his trust in Yahweh is kept safe. When we care too much about others' approval, we become trapped. Trusting God sets us free. Many seek the ruler's favor, but a man's justice comes from Yahweh. In the New Testament, Paul asks whether he is seeking the favor of men, or of God (Galatians 1:10).
