Confession and Courage

Name Date

Read and Think

Proverbs 28 opens with a contrast: The wicked flee when no one pursues; but the righteous are as bold as a lion. A guilty conscience makes people afraid. Evil men don't understand justice; but those who seek Yahweh understand it fully.

Integrity is worth more than wealth. Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his ways, and he is rich. Verse 13 teaches about sin: He who conceals his sins doesn't prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

Trust is central. One who is greedy stirs up strife; but one who trusts in Yahweh will prosper. One who trusts in himself is a fool; but one who walks in wisdom is kept safe. One who gives to the poor has no lack; but one who closes his eyes will have many curses.

Proverbs 28 · Grade 5

The Mercy of Confession

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 28 opens with the psychology of guilt. The wicked flee when no one pursues; but the righteous are as bold as a lion. Fear follows a guilty heart even when there is no danger. Evil men don't understand justice; but those who seek Yahweh understand it fully. Knowing God sharpens our moral vision.

Verse 13 is one of the clearest Old Testament statements about confession. He who conceals his sins doesn't prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Confession means agreeing with God about our sin, and renouncing means turning from it. Blessed is the man who always fears; but one who hardens his heart falls into trouble. He who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.

The chapter ends with trust and generosity. One who rebukes a man will afterward find more favor than one who flatters with the tongue. One who trusts in Yahweh will prosper. One who trusts in himself is a fool; but one who walks in wisdom is kept safe. One who gives to the poor has no lack. In the New Testament, John writes, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
