Read and Think

Proverbs 27 opens with humility about the future. Don't boast about tomorrow; for you don't know what a day may bring. Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.

Friendship is a big theme. Better is open rebuke than hidden love. The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse. Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart; so does earnest counsel from a man's friend. Don't forsake your friend and your father's friend.

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend's countenance. Like water reflects a face, so a man's heart reflects the man. The chapter ends with practical advice: Know well the state of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds, for riches are not forever.

Friends Who Sharpen

Read and Think

Chapter 27 opens with humility. Don't boast about tomorrow; for you don't know what a day may bring. Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips. Praise also tests us: The crucible is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but man is refined by his praise. How we respond to praise shows our character.

True friendship includes honesty. Better is open rebuke than hidden love. The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse. Earnest counsel from a man's friend brings joy like perfume and incense. Don't forsake your friend and your father's friend. Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend's countenance. Friends shape each other through honest conversation.

The chapter closes with faithful work. Know well the state of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds, for riches are not forever, nor does the crown endure to all generations. Careful stewardship provides for a family. In the New Testament, James writes that we do not know what our life will be like tomorrow, and that we should say, If the Lord wills (James 4:14-15).

Show What You Know

  1. How is man refined?

  2. What shows our character?

  3. How do friends shape each other?

  4. What does not endure to all generations?

  5. What does James say we should say about tomorrow?
