Don't be envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them. Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established.

A righteous man falls seven times and rises up again. Don't rejoice when your enemy falls. Don't say, I will do to him as he has done to me.

I went by the field of the sluggard. Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Its stone wall was broken down. Then I saw, and considered well. I saw, and received instruction.

Proverbs 24 · Grade 4

Wisdom Builds

Name Date

Read and Think

Proverbs 24 opens, Don't be envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them; for their hearts plot violence and their lips talk about mischief. Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all rare and beautiful treasure.

The righteous keep going. If you falter in the time of trouble, your strength is small. For a righteous man falls seven times and rises up again, but the wicked are overthrown by calamity. Don't rejoice when your enemy falls. Don't say, I will do to him as he has done to me.

The teacher tells what he saw: I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding. Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. He learned that a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep, brings poverty.

  2. What fills the rooms?

  3. What happens to the wicked?

  4. Whose field did the teacher go by?

  5. What was the field's surface covered with?

Think About It

  1. A righteous man falls seven times and rises up again. What helps you get back up after you fail?

  2. Don't rejoice when your enemy falls. Why is it hard not to be glad when someone who hurt you has trouble?

Memory Verse

“Prepare your work outside, and get your fields ready. Afterwards, build your house.”

Proverbs 24 · Grade 5

Falling and Rising

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 24 continues the words of the wise. Don't be envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them. Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all rare and beautiful treasure. A wise man has great power. Wisdom is pictured as a builder who creates something that lasts.

The righteous are not people who never fall. For a righteous man falls seven times and rises up again, but the wicked are overthrown by calamity. The chapter also forbids revenge and gloating: Don't rejoice when your enemy falls. Don't say, I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man according to his work. An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.

The chapter ends with a lesson learned by observation. I went by the field of the sluggard. Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Then I saw, and considered well. I saw, and received instruction: a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep, so your poverty will come as a robber. Small habits of laziness add up. In the New Testament, Paul writes, Don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).

  1. How is wisdom pictured?

  2. What are the righteous not?

  3. What is an honest answer like?

  4. How will poverty come?

  5. What does Paul say to overcome evil with?
