God protects the weak. Don't move the ancient boundary stone. Don't encroach on the fields of the fatherless, for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you. Fatherless children have God as their Defender.

Proverbs 23 · Grade 5

Give Me Your Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 23 continues the words of the wise with warnings about appetite and greed. When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you. Don't weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint. Wealth is fleeting: it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

God is the protector of the vulnerable. Don't move the ancient boundary stone. Don't encroach on the fields of the fatherless, for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you. Envy is another danger. Don't let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear Yahweh all day long. Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.

The chapter closes with a father's appeal. Listen to your father who gave you life, and don't despise your mother when she is old. Buy the truth, and don't sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding. My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways. The chapter also warns against drinking too much wine. In the New Testament, Jesus says, For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).

Show What You Know

  1. What should you consider when you sit to eat with a ruler?

  3. What should we do instead of envying sinners?
