Proverbs 21 · Grade 5
The Heart in God's Hand
Read and Think
Chapter 21 opens with an image of God's rule: The king's heart is in Yahweh's hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires. A farmer directs water through channels, and God directs even rulers. Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but Yahweh weighs the hearts. God sees past our excuses.
True worship includes how we live. To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to Yahweh than sacrifice. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination. Whoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he will also cry out, but shall not be heard. He who follows after righteousness and kindness finds life, righteousness, and honor.
No human plan can defeat God. There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against Yahweh. The horse is prepared for the day of battle; but victory is with Yahweh. Preparation is wise, but outcomes belong to God. In the New Testament, Paul writes, But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).
