Proverbs 20 · Grade 5
Who Can Say I Am Pure?
Read and Think
Chapter 20 covers many parts of life. It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling. Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. Many men claim to be men of unfailing love, but who can find a faithful man?
Verse 9 asks a searching question: Who can say, I have made my heart pure. I am clean and without sin? The expected answer is that no one can. This points to our need for God's mercy. Yet character is visible: Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right. A righteous man walks in integrity. Blessed are his children after him.
The chapter ends with trust in God's justice and guidance. Don't say, I will pay back evil. Wait for Yahweh, and he will save you. A man's steps are from Yahweh; how then can man understand his way? The spirit of man is Yahweh's lamp, searching all his innermost parts. In the New Testament, John writes, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
