Searching for Wisdom

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 2 is built like an if-then promise. My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you. If you call out for discernment, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and find the knowledge of God.

The reason is simple: For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He lays up sound wisdom for the upright. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity. Wisdom is not just smart thinking. It is a gift from God that grows as we seek Him.

Wisdom also protects. Discretion will watch over you. Understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil. It keeps a person from those who walk in the ways of darkness and from those who would lead them away from God. Therefore walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.

  2. What will he find?

Proverbs 2 · Grade 5

Wisdom Is a Gift

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 2 is one long if-then promise. The if: receive my words, store up my commandments, turn your ear to wisdom, call out for discernment, seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures. The then: you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and find the knowledge of God. Wisdom requires effort, but the goal is not a set of rules. The goal is knowing God.

Yet the effort is not what makes us wise: For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. Seeking and receiving belong together. He lays up sound wisdom for the upright. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, that he may guard the paths of justice, and preserve the way of his saints.

Wisdom guards from two dangers: men who forsake the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness, and the strange woman who forgets the covenant of her God. Both lead away from life. The chapter ends with a choice: Therefore walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. In the New Testament, James says, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him (James 1:5).

  3. What does God preserve?

  4. What two dangers does wisdom guard from?

  5. What does James say to do if you lack wisdom?
