Proverbs 19 · Grade 5
The Lord's Purpose Prevails
Read and Think
Chapter 19 values character over wealth. Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool. Wealth adds many friends, but the poor is separated from his friend. Many friendships based on money do not last. It isn't good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty with one's feet and miss the way.
The chapter praises self-control and mercy. The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger. It is his glory to overlook an offense. He who has pity on the poor lends to Yahweh; he will reward him. A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who utters lies shall perish.
Our plans are under God's rule. Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end. There are many plans in a man's heart, but Yahweh's counsel will prevail. That which makes a man to be desired is his kindness. The fear of Yahweh leads to life, then contentment. In the New Testament, Jesus says that whatever we do for the least of His brothers, we do for Him (Matthew 25:40).
