Proverbs 15 · Grade 5
The Power of a Gentle Tongue
Read and Think
Chapter 15 opens with wisdom for every conflict: A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but deceit in it crushes the spirit. A wrathful man stirs up contention, but one who is slow to anger appeases strife. Gentleness is not weakness; it takes self-control.
God's presence is everywhere. Yahweh's eyes are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good. Sheol and Abaddon are before Yahweh— how much more then the hearts of the children of men! The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight. God cares more about the heart than outward religion.
The chapter values contentment and timing. Better is little, with the fear of Yahweh, than great treasure with trouble. Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is, than a fattened calf with hatred. Joy comes to a man with the reply of his mouth. How good is a word at the right time! The fear of Yahweh teaches wisdom. Before honor is humility. In the New Testament, James writes, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger (James 1:19).
