The Way That Seems Right

Name Date

Read and Think

Proverbs 14 begins, Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands. Wisdom builds up, and folly tears down. A simple man believes everything, but the prudent man carefully considers his ways.

A famous warning appears in verse 12: There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Our feelings and opinions can fool us. We need God's truth to guide us.

God is a safe place for His people. In the fear of Yahweh is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children. The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life. He who is slow to anger has great understanding. He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

Proverbs 14 · Grade 5

Fear of the Lord and Care for the Poor

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 14 contrasts building and tearing down. Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands. A simple man believes everything, but the prudent man carefully considers his ways. A wise man fears and shuns evil, but the fool is hot headed and reckless.

Verse 12 warns: There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Human judgment alone is not enough, because the heart can be deceived. Even in laughter the heart may be sorrowful. Only God's wisdom gives a sure path.

The fear of Yahweh brings security: In the fear of Yahweh is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children. The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life, turning people from the snares of death. How we treat the poor shows what we think of God: He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him. In the New Testament, Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

  3. What does the fear of Yahweh turn people from?
