Proverbs 14 · Grade 5
Fear of the Lord and Care for the Poor
Read and Think
Chapter 14 contrasts building and tearing down. Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands. A simple man believes everything, but the prudent man carefully considers his ways. A wise man fears and shuns evil, but the fool is hot headed and reckless.
Verse 12 warns: There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Human judgment alone is not enough, because the heart can be deceived. Even in laughter the heart may be sorrowful. Only God's wisdom gives a sure path.
The fear of Yahweh brings security: In the fear of Yahweh is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children. The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life, turning people from the snares of death. How we treat the poor shows what we think of God: He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him. In the New Testament, Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
