Proverbs 13 · Grade 5
Choose Your Companions
Read and Think
Chapter 13 continues the theme of a teachable heart. A wise son listens to his father's instruction, but a scoffer doesn't listen to rebuke. Poverty and shame come to him who refuses discipline, but he who heeds correction shall be honored. Correction is a gift to those willing to receive it.
Speech and pride are linked. He who guards his mouth guards his soul. Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is with people who take advice. The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when longing is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.
Verse 20 is one of the best-known sayings about friendship: One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. Companions shape character over time. In the New Testament, Paul quotes a similar truth: Evil companionships corrupt good morals (1 Corinthians 15:33). Wise friendships are a blessing from God.
