Proverbs 11 · Grade 5

The Blessing of the Upright

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 11 begins with business: A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight. God sees what happens in the marketplace. Faith is not only for worship; it shapes how we buy, sell, and work. The integrity of the upright shall guide them, but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.

Many sayings deal with relationships. When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom. One who brings gossip betrays a confidence, but one who is of a trustworthy spirit is one who keeps a secret. Communities are affected too: By the blessing of the upright, the city is exalted.

Generosity is surprising. There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty. He who waters shall be watered also himself. He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf. In the New Testament, Paul writes, God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).
