Proverbs 10 · Grade 5
The Righteous and the Wicked
Read and Think
Proverbs 10 opens the main collection of Solomon's sayings. Most are two-line contrasts. A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. These proverbs describe how life usually works under God's rule. They are wise patterns, not promises that every situation will turn out the same way.
The chapter returns again and again to the righteous and the wicked. Yahweh will not allow the soul of the righteous to go hungry. He who walks blamelessly walks surely. The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot. When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more; but the righteous stand firm forever.
Words are a major theme. The mouth of the righteous is a spring of life. Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all wrongs. He who hides hatred has lying lips. In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely. In the New Testament, Peter writes, Above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8).
