The Beginning of Knowledge

Name Date

Read and Think

Proverbs opens with its purpose: to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding; to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity. It is for the simple and the young. It is also so that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning. Its foundation is stated plainly: The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge, but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. True wisdom does not start with being clever. It starts with honoring God.

A father urges his son to listen to his father's instruction and not to forsake his mother's teaching. Then he warns: My son, if sinners entice you, don't consent. The sinners hope for wealth gained by hurting others. The father explains that such plans trap the people who make them: So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

Finally, wisdom is pictured as a woman calling in the public squares. She asks how long mockers will delight in mockery. Those who refuse her counsel will eat of the fruit of their own way. But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm. In the New Testament, Paul writes that Christ Jesus was made to us wisdom from God (1 Corinthians 1:30).
