The Fear of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

The book opens by giving its purpose: to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding. It is written to give prudence to the simple, but even the wise man may hear, and increase in learning. Then comes the key verse of the book: The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge, but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

A father speaks to his son: My son, listen to your father's instruction, and don't forsake your mother's teaching. Their teaching will be like a garland for his head. Then he warns him: My son, if sinners entice you, don't consent. They hope to get rich by hurting others, but their plans will come back on them.

Next, wisdom is pictured as a woman calling at the city gates. She asks how long the simple will love simplicity. She warns that people who ignore her will eat of the fruit of their own way. But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.
