Paul was in chains when he wrote to Philemon. A church met at his house. Paul thanked God for his faith and love. He said this love had cheered God's people.

Paul wrote to ask a favor. A man named Onesimus had been gone from Philemon's home for a time. While he was with Paul, he came to trust in Jesus. Paul called him his child in the faith. Paul said that once he had been no help, but now he was a big help.

Paul sent Onesimus back. He asked Philemon to welcome him as a dear brother in the Lord. If he owed anything, Paul would pay it. Paul also asked for a guest room to be made ready for him.

Receive Him as Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, writes with Timothy to Philemon, a dear fellow worker, and to the church in his house. Paul thanks God for Philemon's love and faith toward the Lord Jesus and all believers. He says the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through Philemon.

Paul says he could command Philemon, but for love's sake he appeals instead. He appeals for Onesimus, who became his child in the faith while Paul was in chains. Onesimus was once useless to Philemon, but now he is useful to both of them. Paul is sending him back, calling him my own heart. Paul wanted to keep him as a helper but would do nothing without Philemon's consent.

Paul says perhaps Onesimus was apart from Philemon for a time so Philemon could have him forever. He would come back no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother. Paul asks Philemon to receive Onesimus as he would receive Paul himself. If Onesimus has wronged Philemon or owes him anything, Paul will repay it. Paul trusts Philemon to do even more than he asks.

A Beloved Brother

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy write to Philemon, their beloved fellow worker, to Apphia, to Archippus, and to the church that meets in his house. Paul thanks God always for Philemon, hearing of his love and faith toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints. Paul writes that he has much joy and comfort in Philemon's love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through him.

Paul says that though he has boldness in Christ to command what is right, for love's sake he would rather appeal. He appeals for Onesimus, whom Paul calls his child, born in the faith while Paul was in chains. Onesimus once was useless to Philemon, but now he is useful to him and to Paul. Paul is sending him back, calling him my own heart. Paul would have liked to keep him to serve him in prison, but he would do nothing without Philemon's consent, so that Philemon's goodness would be freely given.

Paul suggests that perhaps Onesimus was separated from Philemon for a while so that Philemon would have him forever, no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother. He is especially dear to Paul, and even more to Philemon, both in the flesh and in the Lord. Paul writes: If then you count me a partner, receive him as you would receive me. If Onesimus has wronged Philemon or owes him anything, Paul says to charge it to him, and he signs it with his own hand: I will repay it. Paul is confident Philemon will do even more than he asks. He asks Philemon to prepare a guest room, hoping that through their prayers he will be restored to them.

  3. Why would Paul do nothing without Philemon's consent?

  4. How does Paul say Philemon would have Onesimus back?
