Read the Story

Obadiah 1:1 calls this book the vision of Obadiah. It is a message from Yahweh about Edom. The people of Edom came from Esau, the brother of Jacob.

Edom lived in the clefts of the rock. Their home was high. They asked who could ever bring them down. Yahweh said that even if they flew high like an eagle, he would bring them down.

When strangers came against Jerusalem, Edom stood on the other side. Yahweh told Edom not to look down on their brother or be glad about his trouble. As they had done, it would be done to them. But on Mount Zion there would be people who escape, and the kingdom will be Yahweh's.

High as an Eagle

Name Date

Read and Think

Obadiah 1:1 calls this book the vision of Obadiah. It is a short message from the Lord Yahweh about Edom. Edom came from Esau, so the people of Judah, who came from Jacob, were like Edom's brother.

Edom lived in the clefts of the rock, and their home was high. The pride of their heart deceived them. They said, in effect, that no one could bring them down. Yahweh answered that even if they made their nest among the stars, he would bring them down. Their friends and allies would turn against them.

The main problem was how Edom treated its brother. When strangers entered Jerusalem's gates, Edom acted like one of them. Yahweh lists what Edom should not have done: look down on Judah, rejoice over their trouble, or seize their wealth. The day of Yahweh is near, and their deeds would return on their own heads. The book ends with hope: the kingdom will be Yahweh's.

Show What You Know

  1. Who did the people of Edom come from?

  2. Where would Edom set its nest, according to verse 4?

  3. What did Edom do when strangers came to Jerusalem?

  4. How does the book end?

Think About It

  1. Edom was glad when its brother was in trouble. How can you show kindness when someone is having a hard day?

  2. Pride made Edom feel safe. Why is it better to trust God than to feel proud?

Memory Verse

“For the day of Yahweh is near all the nations! As you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return upon your own head.”

The Kingdom Will Be Yahweh's

Name Date

Read and Think

Obadiah 1:1 calls this book the vision of Obadiah, and it is the shortest book in the Old Testament. It is a message from the Lord Yahweh about Edom. Edom came from Esau, and Judah came from Jacob, so the two nations were family. The book shows that God cares how brothers treat each other.

Edom felt secure. Its people lived in the clefts of the rock, high above everyone else. The pride of their heart deceived them, and they asked who could bring them down. Yahweh replied that even if they rose like the eagle and set their nest among the stars, he would bring them down. Their wise men and mighty men would not save them, and the allies who ate their bread would turn against them.

Edom's great wrong came on the day of Jerusalem's disaster. When strangers carried away its wealth, Edom stood on the other side and acted like one of them. Verses 12-14 list the wrongs: looking down on a brother, rejoicing over his trouble, speaking proudly, and taking his wealth. Then Yahweh announces that the day of Yahweh is near all the nations, and as you have done, it will be done to you. Edom would be cut off, but Mount Zion would be holy, and the kingdom will be Yahweh's.

Show What You Know

  1. Why are Edom and Judah called brothers?

  2. What deceived Edom, according to verse 3?

  3. Name two wrongs listed in verses 12-14.

  4. What principle does verse 15 state?

  2. Obadiah ends with the kingdom belonging to Yahweh. How does knowing God is King give you hope when things seem unfair?
