Read and Think
Obadiah 1:1 calls this book the vision of Obadiah. It is a short message from the Lord Yahweh about Edom. Edom came from Esau, so the people of Judah, who came from Jacob, were like Edom's brother.
Edom lived in the clefts of the rock, and their home was high. The pride of their heart deceived them. They said, in effect, that no one could bring them down. Yahweh answered that even if they made their nest among the stars, he would bring them down. Their friends and allies would turn against them.
The main problem was how Edom treated its brother. When strangers entered Jerusalem's gates, Edom acted like one of them. Yahweh lists what Edom should not have done: look down on Judah, rejoice over their trouble, or seize their wealth. The day of Yahweh is near, and their deeds would return on their own heads. The book ends with hope: the kingdom will be Yahweh's.

Think About It
Edom was glad when its brother was in trouble. How can you show kindness when someone is having a hard day?
Pride made Edom feel safe. Why is it better to trust God than to feel proud?
Memory Verse
“For the day of Yahweh is near all the nations! As you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return upon your own head.”
