Read the Story

God's people kept the Passover in the desert. They remembered how God saved them from Egypt.

Over God's tent there was a cloud. In the day it looked like a cloud. At night it looked like fire.

When the cloud lifted up, the people packed up and walked. When the cloud stopped, they stopped too. Sometimes they stayed a long time. Sometimes just one night. They went where God led.

Memory Verse

“At the commandment of Yahweh, the children of Israel traveled, and at the commandment of Yahweh they encamped. As long as the cloud remained on the tabernacle they remained encamped.”

At the Command of Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

Numbers 9 tells of the first Passover in the wilderness. Some men had touched a dead body and were unclean. They could not keep the Passover. They asked Moses what to do.

Moses said, Wait, that I may hear what Yahweh will command. God said people who were unclean or far away could keep Passover one month later. Nothing was to be left until morning, and no bone was to be broken.

On the day the tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered it. At night it looked like fire. When the cloud was taken up, the people traveled. When it stayed, they camped. At the commandment of Yahweh they traveled, and at His commandment they camped.

Memory Verse

“At the commandment of Yahweh, the children of Israel traveled, and at the commandment of Yahweh they encamped. As long as the cloud remained on the tabernacle they remained encamped.”

Waiting and Following

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 9 records Israel's first Passover after leaving Egypt. Some men were unclean because of a dead body and could not take part. Instead of guessing, Moses told them to wait while he asked God. God gave a gracious answer: anyone unclean or on a far journey could keep Passover a month later.

The Passover lamb was to be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. None was to be left until morning, and not one bone was to be broken. John 19:36 says this was fulfilled when Jesus' bones were not broken on the cross.

The chapter ends with the cloud over the tabernacle. Whether it stayed two days, a month, or a year, Israel stayed. When it lifted, they set out. They followed God's timing, not their own.

Guided by God

Name Date

Read and Think

Numbers 9 opens in the first month of the second year after the exodus. God told Israel to keep the Passover in its appointed season, according to all its statutes. They did so in the wilderness of Sinai. But some men were unclean because of a dead body and could not keep it. They asked Moses and Aaron, Why are we kept back? Moses answered, Wait, that I may hear what Yahweh will command concerning you.

God's answer made room for people who could not keep the feast on time. Those who were unclean or on a long journey could keep it in the second month, on the fourteenth day. They were to eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, leave none until morning, and not break a bone of it. Yet anyone who was clean and simply neglected the Passover would bear his sin. The foreigner living among Israel could also keep the Passover under the same law. John 19:36 sees the unbroken bones of the lamb fulfilled in Jesus on the cross.

The final section describes the cloud. On the day the tabernacle was raised, the cloud covered it, and from evening to morning it looked like fire. When the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, then after that the children of Israel traveled. Whether two days, a month, or a year, Israel stayed as long as the cloud remained, and moved when it lifted. At the commandment of Yahweh they encamped, and at the commandment of Yahweh they traveled. Their whole journey was guided by God.
